Bar Pinotxo holds a well deserved place in our list of Barcelona’s best tapas bars. Founded in 1952, it is situated in La Boqueria, the emblematic market off Las Ramblas. The flamboyant owner Juanito Bayén warmly welcomes customers as he has done for decades, becoming a true local legend. Juanito’s nephew Albert Asin is the chef, masterfully using the limited space available behind the counter.
The 14 seat bar specializes in hearty Catalan cuisine, famous for dishes such as Chipirónes con Mongetes (baby squid with white beans). Another classic is the Arroz Caldoso con Bogavante, a soupy rice in seafood broth made with Galician lobster purchased from a seafood vendor in the Boqueria. Those with a sweet tooth should try the Xuixos; a deep-fried Catalan doughnut with light custard filling.
The other outstanding place to eat in the market is El Quim de la Boqueria.
