Base Elements Gallery was founded in 2003 by Robert Burt and his wife Monica Riu. Robert is an American from Los Angeles who has a background in ceramic art. Monica is also an artist and the couple met in the United States before deciding to move to Barcelona.

Supported by the Departament de Cultura and Fujifilm, the initiative gives students from 15 design schools in Barcelona and around the world the opportunity to have a piece of their art exhibited in the access stairs of the most important metro stations of the city.
