Situated in the heart of Barcelona’s historic fishermen’s quarter, Can Ros is a living testament to over a century of local culinary tradition. Since first opening its doors in 1908, this family-run tavern has remained a beloved gathering place for Barceloneta locals.
Origins
Can Ros was originally established by the Cid family as a humble neighborhood tavern, supplying bulk wine, oil, and pantry staples. As decades passed, it evolved into a lively bar and, by the 1950s, began serving simple hot tapas and fresh fish. Generations of fishermen and neighbors have kept its tables full ever since.
The tavern was Initially called Can Roig (roig is red in Catalan) due to the Cid family’s redheaded members, but changed to Can Ros during Franco’s regime because of the political connotations of the word red. Now in the hands of the fifth generation, Can Ros remains one of Barcelona’s most enduring culinary institutions, renowned for its authentic Catalan seafood and exceptional rice dishes, especially its paella.
Cuisine
After decades under the watchful eye of longtime cook Lucía, the kitchen is now led by chef Jordi Kevin Ballester, who brings a modern touch while staying true to the classic recipes. Can Ros is best known for its hearty rice dishes, including the standout arroz de capipota with beef head, trotters, and langoustines, as well as seafood paella, fideuà, and arroz negro. You can also enjoy simple, flavorful tapas like fried calamari, anchovies, and patatas bravas. Fresh fish and seafood come straight from the market, and the tradition continues with homemade desserts that echo Lucía’s legacy.
Ambience
The atmosphere is authentic and unpretentious, favored by locals over touristy beachfront venues. The no-frills maritime-inspired decor echoes the spirit of old Barceloneta, with rustic wooden tables, a lively bar, and a small terrace perfect for enjoying a glass of vermouth in the sun.
