Can Solé is an iconic seafood restaurant renowned for its classic Catalan dishes, especially rice and seafood specialties. Founded in 1903 as a humble fishermen’s tavern where the day’s catch was cooked on the spot, it has grown into a beloved culinary institution that’s still run by the fourth generation of the same family. Just steps from the old port, Can Solé embodies the spirit of Barcelona’s maritime heritage, serving timeless “marinera” cuisine like fish stews (suquets), paella, and the freshest catch of the day.
Origins
In the late 18th century, this quiet corner of La Barceloneta was home to Gregorio Solé’s shop selling soaps, oils, and sundries. In 1903, Josep Homs transformed the spot into a fishermen’s tavern, keeping the old name for his new venture. What started as a modest seaside tavern has since grown into one of Barcelona’s most respected culinary institutions.
Ambience and Character

Can Solé is set in a charming two-story house on Carrer de Sant Carles, just steps from the lively Passeig de Joan de Borbó and the sea. Inside, the restaurant has lovingly preserved many original features from its early days, including traditional wall tiles, marble tables, a marble-rimmed bar once used for rinsing fresh fish, and a steadfast grandfather clock that has marked more than a century of culinary history. Famous visitors include artists Joan Miró and Antoni Tàpies and framed photos and sketches from the history of the restaurant adorn the walls.
