The hike from L’Arboç to Vilanova i la Geltrú is a captivating journey that takes you through the heart of Catalonia’s interior landscape. This route, which is part of the GR 92 long-distance trail, offers a diverse experience of rural scenery, historical sites, and natural beauty. As a lover of abandoned places, I enjoyed the views crumbling, overgrown masias (rural farmhouses) dotted along the way.
Route Overview

***
The trek covers approximately 19.2 kilometers and takes about 4.5 hours to complete. There is a substantial amount of hills on this trail. Hikers will experience a total elevation gain of 506 meters and a descent of 350 meters. This inland route provides a contrast to the coastal paths of the GR 92, offering an exploration of Catalan countryside.
Landscape and Terrain
In L’Arboç, you’re greeted by the town’s iconic “Catalan Giralda,” a smaller reproduction of La Giralda in Seville, before the path winds through a picturesque landscape of vineyards and farmland. The terrain gradually becomes more varied, leading through the low mountains of the Garraf and Foix parks, rural paths and tracks, forested areas with pine groves, and rocky trails that require careful footing.
Points of Interest
Castellet, a village perched on a hill, offers stunning views of the Foix reservoir and features a historic castle. As you descend, panoramic views of the serene reservoir unfold, followed by a quiet stretch past the ruins of Cal Balaguer, an old farmhouse gradually being overtaken by the forest. The journey concludes in Vilanova i la Geltrú on the coast.
Practical Considerations
Water sources along the route are limited, with the only reliable fountain located near Castellet, so it’s important to carry plenty of water, especially during the summer. Some parts of the trail offer little shade, making sun protection essential. The route is generally well-marked with red and white GR blazes, ensuring easy navigation. Conveniently, both L’Arboç and Vilanova i la Geltrú have train stations, providing easy access to the starting and ending points.
Best Time to Hike
While the route can be hiked year-round, spring and autumn offer the most pleasant temperatures and showcase the vineyards at their best. Summer hikes should be started early to avoid the midday heat.
This hike from L’Arboç to Vilanova i la Geltrú offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical interest, and rural charm. It’s an excellent way to experience the diverse landscapes of interior Catalonia while enjoying a moderately challenging but rewarding hike.
