ARISSA. THE SHADOW AND THE PHOTOGRAPHER, 1922-1936
Antoni Arissa Asmarats (Barcelona , 1900-1980 ) was a printer and Catalan photographer of the early twentieth century. He was born in the Barcelona district of Sant Andreu and took up photography while working in his father’s printing press.
The exhibition, curated by Rafael Levenfeld and Valentín Vallhonrat, includes over 160 black and white photographs in the first retrospective in Spain to be fully devoted to Arissa.
Arissa’s career is followed through three stylistic blocks: the first represents his initial phase as a photographer within the trend of pictorialism (1922-1928).
The second block, extending to the early 1930s, includes photographs which feature modern visual solutions.
The third block (1930-1936) features avant-garde photography and images aligned with the European New Vision movement.
