[dropcap]E[/dropcap]scudellers 44 is located on Plaça George Orwell, the square honoring the anti-fascist English novelist who came to Barcelona in 1936 and was stationed on the Aragon front in the Spanish Civil War. Situated in the heart of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, there has been a property on the site of Escudellers 44 since the 15th century and the present building was constructed in 1769. Plaça George Orwell is now lined with lively restaurants and cafes and features a large sculpture by Catalan surrealist Leandre Cristòfol.
Behind the illustrated original façade there are three buildings totaling approximately 1,500 square meters and an inner courtyard. Under the guidance of Norvet Elite Projects team and award winning restoration specialist Xaviert Guitart, the property is being transformed into 16 apartments designed for modern living.
Prior to working on Escudellers 44, Xavier Guitart led projects on landmarks such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau and applied his insights to Gaudí’s Palau Güell and Colonia Güell. He also worked on the restoration of the 14th-century Basílica de Santa María del Pi.
While protecting and preserving the property’s heritage, the latest contemporary materials and technology are also being used. Escudellers 44 will feature smart home technology providing convenience, energy efficiency and peace of mind. Tenants will be able to change light levels and temperature remotely via smartphone. Home security systems will also be accessible from anywhere in the world.
The Gothic Quarter
The Gothic Quarter is the historic heart of Barcelona, tracing its origins to the Roman colony of Barcino, dating back over 2,000 years. After the Roman empire fell into decline, the Visigoth King Ataülf established his court in Barchinona before being murdered in 415 AD. The neighborhood is a treasure trove of fascinating history and architecture.
Fabulous restaurants and nightlife are within a short walk from Escudellers 44. Nearby, La Plata serves authentic tapas and is set in the Barcelona of Picasso’s youth. The neoclassical Placa Reial is only minutes away and offers a wealth of diversions such as live music at Jamboree Jazz.
